Abelian varieties and
their moduli.
ABSTRACT
Cubic curves in the plane have a group law given by the chord
and tangent process. Abelian varieties are higher-dimensional analogues of
such objects; the basic examples are Jacobians of algebraic curves. This
talk will be devoted first to describing these things, with their group
law, in similar terms and then to discussing the geometry of their moduli
spaces.
