PhD positions in Optimization and Systems Theory
KTH is the largest technical university in Sweden. Education and research cover a broad spectrum within natural sciences and engineering, as well as architecture, industrial engineering and management, urban planning, work science and environmental engineering. There are circa 12,000 full-year undergraduate students, 1,400 postgraduate students and 3,100 employees.
The School of Engineering Sciences carries out a wide range of research at the international front line, from fundamental disciplines such as physics and mathematics, to engineering mechanics with applications such as aeronautics and vehicle engineering. We also offer University degree programs in Engineering Physics, Vehicle Engineering, 'Engineering and Education', and 'Open Entrance', as well as a number of International Masters Programmes.
Optimization and Systems Theory are subjects in applied mathematics primarily devoted to methods of optimization and systems theoretic aspects of control and signal processing. Our group's research is focused on methods and theory development as well as applications to areas such as structural optimization, planning and control of communication networks and networked systems, mobile robotics, robust control and signal processing, and optimization of radiation therapy.
The division is a founding partner of the Center for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (CIAM), the ACCESS Linnaeus Centre and the Centre for Autonomous Systems at KTH. We have an extensive international collaboration which includes European research projects as well as close collaboration with a number of major international research groups. We are also cooperating with industrial companies such as Ericsson, RaySearch Laboratories, and Swedish Space Corporation.
As a PhD student in Optimization and Systems Theory you will have a unique opportunity to gain expertise in a broad range of theory and experience in application. You will participate in advanced research in an international and dynamic environment.
We currently look for PhD students funded by several projects. These projects involve research in a wide spectrum ranging from theory development in large-scale optimization and decentralized control to applications in structural optimization, formation flight of satelites, and communication networks. Qualifications
We seek highly motivated individuals holding an MSc degree in engineering physics, applied mathematics, electrical engineering, computer science or related fields. A specialization in optimization or systems and control theory is an advantage. The candidates should have excellent grades and good skills in oral and written communication.

Employment
Form of employment: fixed-term contract post.
The employment is intended for doctoral students aiming at licentiate and/or doctoral degree within 2/4 years. Up to 20% of departmental duties such as teaching assistanceship is included in the position.
Approximately half of the courses at Optimization and Systems Theory are taught using the Swedish language. This limits the number of possible positions for students who do not speak Swedish.
The salary is set according to the current agreement on doctoral student employment.
