Robust track-following control for dual-stage servo systems in hard disk drives
Abstract. Dual-stage servo control is expected to be important for high
precision track-following of the magnetic read/write head in hard disk drives.
In this talk, for a general dual-stage multi-sensing system, multirate robust
track-following control synthesis techniques are presented. The system to be
considered includes both parametric and dynamic uncertainties, representing
plant variations which occur in batch fabrication. For such uncertain system,
a track-following control problem is formulated as an optimization problem of
worst-case H2 performance. To solve the optimization problem, three LMI-based
controller design techniques are presented, that are, mixed H2/H-infinity,
mixed H2/mu, and robust H2 syntheses. Realistic examples are given to illustrate
the usefulness of the proposed techniques for maintaining track-following
property even under plant perturbations.
